Impuro

Unconventional flamenco in it’s purest form

Flamenco pioneer Sofia Castro is touring once again with Dansnät Sverige. This time, on a quest to redefine what is considered genuine flamenco.

Flamenco dancer and choreographer, Sofia Castro has unabashedly embraced the role as a trailblazer within the dance style. With cross-border collaborations and a sense of renewal, she actualises flamenco with groundbreaking rhythms and a hard stamp of her heel. Her style feels as provocative as it does innovative. A fresh voice in an otherwise traditional field.

Her performance IMPURO is no exception. Castro’s wholly unique approach to flamenco shifts conventional perceptions of what we consider to be authentic, genuine, and pure. With projections, electronic music, and fascinating light displays, the piece becomes not only distinctive but a spectacle.

The performance emerges at the intersection between what’s regarded as pure/impure and genuine/fake. It questions why the original style is considered more desirable and takes precedence over what’s viewed as unconventional. Instead, IMPURO chooses to view the unorthodox as indispensable components and a prerequisite for further development of the art form.

Maybe we’re all authentic imitations?
