La Edad de Oro

Israel Galván – The Return of a Masterpiece

Two decades after its premiere, flamenco’s leading avant-gardist Israel Galván returns with his iconic performance La Edad de Oro – a work that has become a cornerstone of his repertoire and left its mark across the globe.

The title, which means “The Golden Age,” refers to flamenco’s heyday from the late 19th century to the 1930s – an era when song and dance were at the forefront, characterized by simplicity, sincerity, and a deep grounding in tradition.

In La Edad de Oro, Galván is not merely searching for flamenco’s roots – he exposes them. Together with singer María Marín and musician Rafael Rodríguez, Galván establishes a stage dynamic that deepens the work’s austere character. By stripping away the decorative and focusing on the essential, a raw presence emerges where body, voice, and strings interact in an unfiltered expression. The performance is not nostalgic, but a contemporary response to a lost form – a flamenco that burns, breaks, and moves.

For me, it’s about surrendering to the silence, with the memory of the guitar and the singing. The dancer’s body is a symphony of movements and a musical instrument. ‘Edad de Oro’ is my personal dance laboratory

    Choreographer

Israel Galván is a groundbreaking Spanish choreographer and dancer, born in Seville into a family of flamenco dancers. After receiving a classical flamenco education, he has, since his debut with the piece ¡Mira! / Los zapatos rojos (1998), transformed flamenco dance into a contemporary and boundary-defying form of expression. His works are characterized by a physical deconstruction of flamenco, incorporating movement elements from bullfighting, football, activism, and queer stage aesthetics.

Galván has received numerous international awards, including the Premio Nacional de Danza (Spain), the Bessie Performance Award (New York), and the National Dance Award for Exceptional Artistry (United Kingdom). In 2016, he was named Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. He also appears in the Netflix series Move and is an associate artist at Théâtre de la Ville in Paris.
