The Room Where it Happens

The room we avoid – and yet never stop searching for

The Room Where It Happens is a work that depicts our modernday fear of emptiness and the insatiable need to fill every moment with activity. Our accelerated lifestyle, our dependence on digital devices and the constant need to be connected are recreated here. Alongside this, another aspect is portrayed – an inner life in which we search for something beyond all external distractions, fighting to preserve our true identity.

Iker Karrera invites us into a claustrophobic and enigmatic universe, in which light never quite reveals the complete picture. Shadows, silhouettes and precisely coordinated movements shape a work characterised by uncertainty and introspection. The five dancers move with a degree of precision that reveals a state in which activity is no longer about creating, but rather about avoiding emptiness.

The Room Where It Happens is both a warning and an opening – an attempt to create a room or space where something actually can happen…when we dare to pause.

Whenever I delve into creating a new piece I like to connect with what is happening around us.

    Artistic director & Choreographer

Iker Karrera is a Madrid-based choreographer and dancer, originally from the Basque region of Spain. His works navigate between physical intensity and emotional complexity, often exploring contemporary digital and social dynamics.

He has a wide-ranging background, having choreographed for everything from films and Prada advertising campaigns to FIFA’s closing ceremony and the musical Mamma Mia!. He set up his own dance company in 2016 and has since created works that have been performed internationally – from the Battery Dance Festival in New York to Cinedans in the Netherlands. He also runs his own dance school (Danza 180) in Madrid, where teaching and creativity go hand in hand with a sense of curiosity about the role of dance in a changing world.
